Hello All,

I am a long-time hiker and more recent Appalachian Trail enthusiast. As an
outdoor person I have dabbled in birding and more recently have become more
and more interested in wild plants in a variety of outdoor environments.

My hiking experience began with the Philadelphia Trail Club in the
mid-to-late 1970s and in the years since I have hiked with many of the
Delaware Valley clubs in eastern PA, Delaware and New Jersey. For most of
those years the AT was little on my radar screen, though I did go on hikes
in the Pocono Mountains and Delaware Water Gap with the Phila. Club - some
of which touched on the AT - during the earlier non-AT years. One PTC member
used to call me the "flatlander," since most of my hike locations were
either in PA areas south of the mountains, in South Jersey or Maryland. In
the late 1990s much of this focus changed. My girlfriend and I began going
up to the Poconos on a semi-regular basis and then the AT began calling more
clearly than in past years.

For the past seven years I have been closely involved with the Philly club's
AT effort, the last five co-chairing the club's maintenance effort with my
partner, David Scheid. An activity such as this comes as something of a
natural for me because, among other things, I had already been dealing with
the state DCNR and Game Commission in arranging my walks in the Poconos and
elsewhere. As co-chair, I have gone to many meetings, conferences and other
related activities relative to our trail maintenance work. During this last
year Dave and I began to touch base with local Lehigh/Carbon County
residents near/adjacent to our trail section as part of an ATC-encouraged
public outreach effort. That investment of time and thought has benefited us
in several ways and should continue to do so into the future. Related to all
of the above, a few years back, I found out that our trail section nearly
suffered from the aftermath of a planned Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
re-routing of Route 476 through Lehigh Gap - right in the middle of our
trail section. I made a few useful connections and then wrote an initial
summary of what took place during the years when this sad and unnecessary
story transpired. Lucky for us and the Trail wiser heads prevailed and a
second tunnel tube was drilled alongside the original one during the early
1990s. Lastly, on a simple matter of fact basis, I would like to mention to
those not aware, the Philadelphia Trail Club's section carrys with it an
extra workload that most other trail sections simply do not. We have had to
and continue to deal with the fact that much of our section is a superfund
site. Thus the major reason for many of the meetings I have needed to go to
and related matters to both think about and deal with.

Of an almost purely personal interest, I have been pursuing natural areas
all over the Mid-Atlantic Region through photography, whether it be the
coastal plain along the Chesapeake Bay or the Appalachian Trail. I have
taken hundreds of photos of the Philly Club's AT section, as well as other
nearby club's trail sections - inclusive of Delaware Water Gap as well. My
interest is in geology and plant life - from trees and mushrooms to
wildflowers. Further, in recent years, I have joined an amateur plant club
in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Botanical Club.

Sincerely,

Paul Schubert
Trails Co-Chair
